Universal Records have stepped in and had a cover song pulled from Pitchfork. The track in question was Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move covered by Solange Knowles. She's the sister of Beyonce, but has a more indie aesthetic.

Why's this a big deal? Simple. Solange didn't try to make any money from this, never intended to publish or sell the track, just covered a song she likes. Dirty Projectors had no objection, but some penny-pinching record label that is stuck in the 19th century did.

She raised a good point when talking about it on Twitter: "Doesn't Lil Wayne a Universal artist rap over other folks records?" Yes, he does, badly. Of course, his label has to iron out royalties because his recordings are all for sale.

Think of the precedent this garbage could set. What's stopping a label from trying to yank someone covering their favourite song on YouTube now? That's bullshit.

You can get the cover here. Would recommend checking out the original too, quality song by a quality act.

I did a bit of research on cover versions a while back, it was my understanding from the legal gobbledigook that I can't read too well that you can cover a song without the artists permission in America and Australia, so long as you pay them required royalties.... but that goes against that federal copyright law... hmmm

Royalties are required if you're actually publishing a cover.

Under current interpretation of the law, that does not extend to someone covering a track they like and posting it online for kicks. But trust record companies to draw a long bow.
