Peter Provan, Balmain's captain in the 1969 grand final win against
South Sydney, died yesterday - just three days before the Heritage
round clash that celebrates that very match. Provan, the brother of St
George great Norm, had fought a long battle with Parkinson's Disease
and was not due to attend Sunday's SCG clash between Wests Tigers and
the Rabbitohs.
The annual clash at the SCG celebrates the 1969 decider, one of the
most famous grand finals. Wests Tigers players will wear black
armbands, and the crowd observe a minute's silence.
