Usman Khawaja in historic Test selection

USMAN Khawaja may become the first Muslim to represent Australia after he was chosen in the 14-man squad to play Tests against Pakistan at Lord’s and Leeds next month.

While wicket-keeper Brad Haddin has been picked subject to fitness and remains in doubt with tennis elbow, Khawaja has been selected as the reserve batsman to replace the injured Phil Hughes, who recently had shoulder surgery.

Swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus, the leading wicket-taker in last year’s Ashes series, also returns to the squad after missing most of the summer with a knee injury, forcing out Clint McKay from the party which toured New Zealand earlier this year.

Hilfenhaus claimed five wickets for Australia A yesterday in a four-day match against Sri Lanka at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field, which ended with a comfortable home victory.

Khawaja, 23, was born in Pakistan but his family moved to Australia when he was a young boy.

In a strange twist of fate he could soon be playing against his country of birth, cricket’s foremost Muslim Test nation.

His selection comes after an outstanding season for NSW, scoring 698 runs at 63 with three centuries despite missing three Sheffield Shield matches with a broken thumb.

Last month chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch claimed the replacement for Hughes, who recently had shoulder surgery, was likely to come from the one-day squad, before ignoring his own advice and naming Khawaja today.

“Usman Khawaja has been selected on the back of some very strong Sheffield Shield performances,” Hilditch said.

“He is seen by the selection panel as being capable of batting anywhere in the order in Test cricket, but importantly for this particular series a top-order batsman who could bat in the top four should the opportunity arise.”

Already ruled out of the one-day squad, Haddin has been given another week to prove he has recovered from a tendon problem in his left elbow but that appears increasingly unlikely, leaving his understudy Tim Paine in line for a Test debut.

Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Haddin will continue his rehabilitation in Sydney and his availability for the Tests series will be determined over the next week.
Mitchell Johnson has trained strongly over the past four days with no sign of the elbow injury which kept him out of the one-day series.

“He has been cleared by medical staff to step up his training in preparation for both the Twenty20 and Test series against Pakistan,” Kountouris said.

Johnson will depart for the UK later this week while members of the Test squad not currently in the UK will depart on Friday week.

The two Tests against Pakistan will take place at Lord’s from July 13 to 17 July and Headingley from July 21 to 25.

The 14-man squad is:

Ricky Ponting (c) TAS 35
Michael Clarke (vc) NSW 29

Brad Haddin NSW 32
Ryan Harris QLD 30
