CHELSEA V MANCHESTER UTD

So it begins, the traditional football season opener kicks off when Chelsea face Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley. The trophy is also known as the Charity Shield as it is used by the Football Association to raise money for good causes. Chelsea, won both the EPL and FA last season and so Premiership runners-up Manchester United will be their opponents.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea’s biggest departure during the summer has been Joe Cole to Liverpool. Michael Ballack has also left the club for Bayern Leverkusen. Yossi Benayoun has joined Chelsea from Liverpool.

Manchester United Team News

New signing Javier Hernandez, who impressed playing for Mexico during the summer’s World Cup, may be thrown into the lineup depending on what is done with Wayne Rooney. Chris Smalling has also joined from Fulham and could start.

Possible Lineup:

-------------------VDS----------------------
Rafael--Vidic--Evans/Smalling--Evra/Fabio
-------------Fletcher--Scholes-----------------
Nani/Valencia------------------------Park
-------Chicharito/Berba--Rooney-----------

It's hard to say at this stage, may have abit more of an idea closer to kickoff. Whatever the team however we shall prevail!!

Good stuff Becks, was thinking about putting it up soon. Pretty keen to get a good look at our lineup for the season. Community Shield means that the real stuff isn't too far away Very Happy I think we'll line up like so:

Turnbull
Ivanovic - Carvalho - Terry - A.Cole
Essien
Benayoun - Lampard - Malouda
Drogba - Anelka

I'd rather Hilario in goals, even though he screwed up big time recently, but Turnbull has done so in pre-season as well. Talk has been that Ross will start though. Even if Ramires signs before Sunday I can't see him playing in this one so soon after joining the club, so the lineup is pretty self-explanatory. I don't think Ancelotti will employ the diamond, I don't have anything against it but he didn't for the most of the 2nd half of last season he didn't use it so I don't think he will now. If he does then Yossi might play behind the strikers, pretty sure he can play as a central attacking midfielder as well.

We should win of course. Drogba to score as he always does at Wembley Smile

Manchester United has won most of their pre-season friendlies and Chelsea hasn't really played at their best in their friendlies even with a full-strength line up, so I'm going for a 2-0 win to the Red Devils with Chicharito and Rooney scoring for them

To be fair the first 2 sides you listed had ample quality and you should have been much too strong.

Defensive mistakes have proved costly in all the preseason games we've lost, and while I do admit we should have been too strong, we haven't once yet used a full-strength defensive line-up, and all those defensive mistakes have come from players who aren't in our best XI - namely, Turnbull, Hilario and Zhirkov. We will, unfortunately, probably use one of those keepers in this match - I don't think Cech will be fit.

Man. United 2-1.

Unfortunately with this game being on Setanta Sports (which I don't have) and therefore can't watch it, my interest in the game is minimal.

Whoever edited the pic cheers haha..

Fergie has said that Owen and Rooney will both get 45mins, Rafael and Fabio in doubt after getting food poisoning and Michael Carrick is out for a few weeks picking up an injury in our last friendly. Mame Diouf and Welbeck both unlikely to be used as they are going on loan but Tom Cleverley will remain at OT this year so he may see some time .

Guess that means we'll line up in something like a 4-1-2-3 formation. Not a bad side, could obviously be better though, would prefer Drogba starting but no surprise he isn't risked starting for this one...he will make an appearance off the bench though. I thought Carvalho would've started instead of Ferreira. Where's all the other TFW Chelsea fans?!?!

Still confident for a win though. Am I right in saying that if it's a draw after 90 minutes, it'll go straight to penalties?

Solid team. Paulo Ferreira was pretty average last season, not sure why he gets a start here. Strange to see Carvalho isn't starting, but he hasn't featured too much in the pre-season matches... Hoping to see Yossi get some game time and tear open the United defence. Tipping a scrappy 1-0 win to us.

Hopefully Rooney, Drogba and Lampard get injuries and are out for 6 months Razz

Think it will be a crap game, 1-1 after 90. 4-2 on penalties to United.

Congrats United. Even though it was just pre-season, it always sucks to lose to United, and even though it was only the Community Shield, a piece of silverware to kick off the season would've been nice.

Just on a sidenote, for the past 6 seasons, the winner of the Community Shield has gone on to win the EPL. Hopefully that's not the case here.
