Canberra Raiders Off-Season News

The Canberra Raiders have suffered yet another injury blow to a top line player, with Antonio Winterstein expected to be sidelined for the first month of the season because of a broken jaw he suffered in a trial. This continues the horror injury run the Brenton has experienced in his NRLMG coaching career, with the St. George Illawarra Dragons, who Brenton coached, enduring a ruthless injury toll in the 2010 NRLMG season, with up to 7 first graders out to injury at one point in the campaign. "Antonio will be a loss to our already stretched backline depth, with Brent Tate to return in Round 20 at the earliest, Greg Inglis under an injury cloud for the first couple of rounds and hooker Anthony Watts out for the first half of the season".

The forward pack which will be named in Round 1 is a mystery, as only one player, captain Gareth Ellis, is a confirmed starter for the Raiders. The bench is also a stab in the dark with Glenn Hall, Jon Green, Mose Masoe, Ashton Sims, Travis Burns, Jacob Lillyman, Sam Mataora, Steve Southern and Ricky Thorby in the hunt for that elusive interchange spot. It is likely that all of these players will get a shot at some point in the season.

The future is looking bright for the Raiders with their strong pool of youth which includes Kalifa Faifai Loa, Kane Linnett, Ray Thompson, Sam McKendry, Mose Masoe, Shaun Johnson, Blake Leary, Drury Low, Kevin Naiqama, James Segeyaro and Jason Taumalolo. Brenton expects most of these to play a few games this season. "I'm looking at KFFL, Linnett, Thompson, McKendry, Masoe and Segeyaro to be big hits this year while the others to crack the team for a couple of games, particularly during the Origin period".

Edwards and Tetevano's Knight Fight

TWO young Knights have faced off for assumingly the last remaining bench spot for the Novacastrian's Round 1 encounter against Penrith.

Joel Edwards, 21 and Zane Tetevano, 20 have both produced strong impressions on coach Rick Stone and Knights manager Thtr.

Edwards who made his Knights debut last season and Tetevano fresh as a Toyota Cup graduate who is destined for first grade have both been very intimidating for the opposition, Edwards scoring two tries in three games.

"With Fa'aoso, Chris Houston and Hilder set for the three out of four position the last spot in definately within territory for these two youngsters; They've arguably the best two forwards for us in the trials and at the moment it's very much 50/50 decision as to who will get that position, a very hard decision" Thtr replied.

Thtr has also downplayed Kyle O'Donnell's chances after one club's interest declaring declaring him a rank outsider to play Round 1.

Tolman to Tower the Giants

Exciting forward Aiden Tolman is set to explode onto the NRLMG scene in 2011 after near certain to gain a starting position at his new side Canterbury.

Tolman, 22 known for his hard-working efforts in defence and his go forward has been likened to South Sydney Star Sam Burgess by coach Thtr.

"They have very similar games, both like to offload and are very keen individuals in attack and defense being the same age although at slightly different levels of Football. Sam will enter his fifth year of International football with England also has played one game with NRL All-Stars pre-season 2010 and Tolman is an highly emerging origin hope, Burgess has elements of Tolman in the games I've seen him play in the front row last season"

Tolman has impressed in the fantasy world by often posting scores of in the 40's and 50's when starting matches and posted a starting average of 44 over 9 games with Melbourne last season.

Bookies have Tolman slight favourite to score the most fantasy points for a prop forward in the 2011 NRLMG season, second is veteran Titan's prop Luke Bailey with Born again Bronco Ben Hannant not too far out of the picture.

NRLMG players to learn their fate in just over 22 hours

NRL players will find out if they've done enough to convince their head coach they are ready for round 1 in as soon as 22 hours away.

Coaches will be scrambling if they find themselves in some bother to name a 17 by this friday when the NRL Kicks off a double header this friday with trading to go ballistic between tomorrow and kick-off.

Knights coach Thtr still doesn't know what side will be taking the field from friday onwards.

"It's very tough and very unpredictable, obviously some players are a likely chance but some others are upon the decifering procedure coaches have on the tuesday"

I have a squad that is a bit under par atm but have alot of rookies who could do really well this year, Aiden Tolman, Dylan Farrell & Joel Edwards to name a few and I am really interested to see how Paul Aiton goes this year i have some very good wraps on him, top worker if he is given the minutes"

Subject to selection, Thtr has already decided on his captain for round 1 and that being boom youngster forward Aiden Tolman; Yet to decide on a vice captain but sources say it's down to fellow forward Zeb Taia and NRL Rabbitohs halfback Chris Sandow.

Knights are rank outsiders against presumed heavyweights Penrith who is assured to make a strong selection for the opening rounds encounter.

MGTAB Odds:

Head to Head:
Knights 6.00
Penrith 1.11

Margin:
Knights Win 1-59 6.75
Knights Win 59+ 13.00
Penrith Win 1-59 3.05
Penrith Win 59+ 1.45

Newcastle Knights: Friday Night Wrap

The Newcastle Knights have started off with mixed results after the first Friday of the year.

The Novacastrians had 5 out of their 17 men playing in last night's game.

The Highlight was Bench player Leeson Ah Mau who scored a very solid 33 to kick off the year.

The other four men were involved in the Roosters V Rabbitohs game with Veteran Prop trying hard on the football field but not delivering a good fantasy average with a mere 21 and fellow Rabbitohs Dylan Farrell and Halfback Chris Sandow didn't impress either with 11 and 27 respectively.

Opponent Joseph Leilua was impressive on the night in attack however due to little tackles made, errors and other things only managed 8.

Thtr said overall he was dissapointed with the start his team showed but was impressed with Leeson Ah Mau and also commented late starter Sam Williams now has a mortgage on the No.7 spot next week if he can put in a reasonable effort on sunday.

The Score by Ah Mau will put alot of pressure on the starting backrow of Zeb Taia, and Raiders Trevor Thurling and Joe Picker, Picker in doubt for the R1 fixture.

PostSubject: Knights slay poor Panthers   Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:38 pm

The Newcastle Knights have caused a massive upset over tipped heavyweights Penrith. The 102 point rout was equally shared by Penriths abysmal performance and Newcastles attacking onslaught. Prop forward Aiden Tolman was best on ground with a freakish 60 point haul, the captains double of 120 was more then the difference of the final scores.

Knights Claim Another Scalp over Stagg-Less Cowboys

Kade SNOWDEN played tonight in a bid to close the gap but despite his best efforts the loss of captain David Stagg was too much to bear.

In what will be a big upset over the premiership favourites the combined efforts of Forwards Joe Picker, Leeson Ah Mau and Captain Aiden Tolman and Halves Chris Sandow & Kris Keating will be more then enough to beat the Cowboys.

"The loss of David Stagg was brutal for the Cowboys and probably lost them the match, the change to Kade Snowden at Vice Captain would of certainly been a closer contest but lucky for the knights he picked someone else"

"We can't just reflect on luck, A win is a win and we'll take it"

The Novacastrians play struggling Manly next week where they are very short odds to claim the win and have a 3-0 record.

To be honest. I haven't really been tested yet. Max's team was fucking poor in Rnd 1 and Kromy lost Stagg in Round Two and Manly won't be a test barring a miracle.

my players have started off strong to begin with which is good but have to see how consistent they end up but i've posted two good scores Rnd 1 and Rnd 2 (470 i counted) so that's a positive

Canberra Raiders on the Foot of the Table

The Canberra Raiders are currently placed at 16th after injury has decimated their squad, but the time has come to get their first win on the board against fellow strugglers the Wests Tigers. Even though the Tigers have chalked up a win in their 2011 campaign, they have only scored 692 points, compared to the Raiders 820.

The Raiders welcome new faces to the squad for this round. Kalifa Faifai Loa, James Segeyaro and Esi Tonga are the new additions to the squad.

Nate Myles is also a welcome addition to the club. The Panthers in return received the wrecking ball, but average DreamTeam scorer in Frank Pritchard and the erratic Albert Kelly. They will be small losses to the team considering the amount of players to return to the side in the next month. The addition of Nate Myles gives the team extra strike power and possibly their new captain, overtaking from Andrew Ryan.

Asked if the Raiders will be perhaps the Fairytale team of NRLMG season 2011, Brenton laughed off the claim.

Beckham admits making mistakes

Melbourne Storm manager Beckham has admitted he made a mistake when letting go of star Cameron Smith before the start of the season. "Look at the time Smithy wasn't happy and i thought the offer was decent, looking at it now yeah i regret making that decision." Rumours have surfaced that Beckham and certain "Star" players at the Storm are clashing and he is indeed looking for new players to come into the team. Storm CEO Knob Shiner had these comments to say "In the last few days we have tried to make contact with Manly but it seems their manager is on holidays, Aiden Tolman is certainly on the radar but it seems he has a "special" relationship with his manager THTR, we are also keen on Mitch Aubusson from the Panthers, Nate Myles of the Raiders, Simon Mannering of the Broncos as well as other players we aren't willing to name at this point in time"

Knights lose by barest of margins in Shock, Two to debut

Newcastle Knights went down to the Manly Sea-eagles by a point over the weekend in an upset.

Aiden Tolman as usual performed consistently & strongly with 49 points, and sharing a good day was also vice-captain Zeb Taia on sunday scoring 48.

The dissapointment came with Five-eighth Kris Keating, Winger Krisnan Inu & Hooker Paul Aiton all failing to perform, Aiton has recorded a poor showing for the third week in a row and will not take his place in the Knights Round 4 Team facing the Dragons, Inu in his second week of the top grade has also been dropped although being named on Tuesday, Rabbitohs Junior Kane Morgan will debut in Jersey No.20.

Other changes include Joseph Leilua coming in for Joel Moon who picked up a cork injury in the Warriors loss to the dragons and was opted to be rested, Blake Ferguson shifts to centre with Leilua to shift onto the wing.

Injuries to Joe Picker & Ben Rogers has required more changes with talented junior and workhorse Joel Edwards to take his place in the starting side and Marvin Karawana to take Rogers place though starting with Kris Keating shifting to Hooker in Aiton's absence. Josh Miller returns to the top grade on the bench after having a week off.

Inu, Moon & Aiton all remain on standby but are not expected to play.

Knights Team
1. Brett Stewart
2. Joseph Leilua
3. Blake Ferguson
4. Wes Naiqama
20. Kane Morgan
6. Marvin Karawana
7. Chris Sandow
8. Aiden Tolman [c]
9. Kris Keating
10. Evarn Tuimavave
11. Joel Edwards
12. Leeson Ah Mau
13. Zeb Taia [vc]

14. Richie Fa'aoso
15. Ben Ross
16. Josh Miller
17. Trevor Thurling

18. Paul Aiton
19. Krisnan Inu
21. Joel Moon

(Three to be omitted)

Tolman Traded

Newcastle Knights have traded Gun forward Aiden Tolman to the Dragons in a massive trade offer.

Knights received another talented youngster in Trent Merrin and backrowers Matt Prior and Ben Creagh and also half Mitchell Pearce.

But with reward comes reluctance along with Tolman is Leeson Ah Mau, Utility Kris Keating, Forward Ben Ross, and Joseph Leilua.

New look Knights build unassailable lead

The Newcastle Knights have finished their weekend with their best performance in the season with an uncomfirmed 555 points with adjustments to come, New recruits Trent Merrin, Matt Prior, Mitchell Pearce & Ben Creagh having a major hand in Newcastles monster overall score with Ben Creagh the pick of the bunch with 52 while the other three holding their own.

Halfback Chris Sandow continues to impress with a man of the match performance against Manly and 44 fantasy points while Krisnan Inu showed vintage form with over 200 metres and 29 fantasy points.

The Dragons although posessing two of the top 10 fantasy scorers Jamie Soward producing magnificent figures with 124 after a captain's double and Aiden Tolman who is still to play tomorrow night will fall short with Kris Keating the only other player for the Dragons still to lace on a boot, however the unconfirmed 168 point lead will be a sufficient buffer to claim the two points.

Despite Dragons having three scratchings and down to 14 men before the game, the late withdrawals were most likely to have not have a baring effect on the result.

Update: After deduction the margin reduces to 140 but it will still be enough for the Knights to claim the two points over the Dragons, However the loss of three players before the match starts to look a bit more critical for the Dragons.

KNIGHTS PREPARE FOR BIG GAME AGAINST BIG COMPETITION

The Newcastle Knights go into Round 5 with 3 wins and 1 loss putting them into the top four, however will have their hands full against a suprisingly dissapointing Broncos outfit who has scored the most points out of anyone in the NRLMG but have failed defensively being the worst side.

It will prob be the biggest match so far for us, We've won through pretty comfortably in our three wins and last week was just bitterly dissapointing and a pretty poor showing from the boys something that should of shown an undefeated streak so far.

The Novacastrian Based Club made a very controversial decision outing big gun Aiden Tolman in a jack of all trades, This reporter questions the decision;

It was a difficult choice to make and it was certainly not done overnight, alot of things to consider and we just felt it was the right choice at the time because ultimately it has strengthen the team and it showed with our highest score this season and obviously Tolman is a wonderful player that will definitely question the origin ranks this year and all the best to him.

Word is that the Knights will opt to play "Mr Fix-It" Matt Prior at centre for the game against the Broncos after Joel Moon is struggling to fight back from a cork injury, South Sydney Rookies Kane Morgan & Nathan Peats are expected to be dropped this week however another rookie is rumoured to making his return a week early in the form of Dylan Farrell after being loaned to battling club Canberra although the three-try hero against Manly on Friday is in strong doubt with a minor shoulder dislocation.

"Dylan will be a very handy player to have back and hopefully he's learnt a few things being in a different culture, one of a struggling club where you just have to make that extra effort of yourself because things are tough and he certainly made a very good showing for them this week"

Other potential changes is Marvin Karawana may start at Hooker and Evarn Tuimavave will make his return to the starting side as one of the props alongside Trent Merrin with Prior potentially shifting out to Centre. Former Raiders forward Joe Picker is rated a 50/50 chance to play this week although not expected back until Round 6 after sustaining an Ankle sprain in Round 3. Another fellow raider in Trevor Thurling would remain on the bench if Picker was to not play however should he play Thurling would be tipped to drop off for the Round 5 clash.

The Knights filled with Raiders, Rookie Half Sam Williams is tipped to regain a spot in the side after producing some masterful performances in the NYC competition, His inclusion would further strengthen the team after producing 32 points in his debut game in Round 1, Another raider in Blake Ferguson is showing excellent form and Is a chance to play Fullback this week where he may be even more dangerous.

SBW’s claims Premiership is Titans to lose

Titans manager SBW has announced the Premiership is his sides to lose, after racking up their second consecutive 600 point total in a convincing win over a struggling Raiders outfit this week.

The fact this score was achieved without star utility Ashley Harrison makes the feat even more impressive, with Anthony Laffranchi admirably stepping up into a leadership role.

Matt Hilder, who has embraced his role at hooker, tackled his heart out on the way to an impressive 59 points this week and represents the sort of determination being shown across the board at the Titans in 2011 to date.

Riley Brown also scored impressively from the bench, although the imminent return of Nathan Friend seems set to see him miss out in the coming weeks.

SBW is said to be content with his squad, although he has refused to rule out further changes. One area likely to come under some consideration is in the halves, where Peter Wallace and Ashley Harrison have partnered up this year. SBW is said to be slightly concerned with the Titans depth in this area, and the injury to Harrison has highlighted this aforementioned lack of depth. A genuine 6 or 7 would be of genuine interest to SBW.

h. His position of choice is at Second Row but his versatility also allows him to play at Prop and on certain occasions has filled in at Centre hence his nickname Mr. Fix It.

pay attention mate!!! who cares if he is an unorthodox centre, he can play in that position and has in the past.

Lockyer has played fb yet he would never be allowed. Same goes for Prior he's hardly a centre mate, we said we would go off DT positions unless obvious cases arose (eg. Beau Scott at Centre).. Your call if you want his score this week.
