Becuase I am just wondering, why is it that Muhammad Ali is regarded by some as the greatest athlete of all time, even though Sugar Ray Robinson is generally regarded as the greatest boxer of all time?

I am pretty sure because he was great in an era where being an african american boxer was not considered acceptable.

What he did for boxing and the hopes of African American people was outstanding.

Ali had to overcome a lot of challenges to get to what he achieved. The vietnam war drama, being stripped of the title and being suspended from boxing for 4 years. No matter what challenges he faced he beat them and I think that is what makes him the greatest athlete of all time.

Pound for Pound there is no doubt that Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest boxer of all time.

Still confused as to how Ali can be regarded as the greatest athlete of all time, even though he probably wasn't the greatest boxer of all time

There's your answer, SRR is considered the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time, but head to head Ali was probably better (debatable), but only because he was bigger. Heavyweight is probably the ideal weight division for a boxer, so Ali was more of a perfect boxing specimen.

I don't even think it's debatable that Ali was better 'head to head'.

He would annihilate SRR if they ever fought.

It's really hard to just pick one boxer that everyone agrees to as being the greatest of all time. I guess it's why many say 'arguably the greatest boxer of all time' when referring to boxers like Ali or Sugar Ray. Everyone has their own reason as to who they think is the greatest.

Ali being a heavyweight (and a great one for that matter) probably edges out Sugar Ray. But then you have Sugar Ray who promoted sportswriters to develop 'pound for pound' ratings because he was so good in different weight division (but never at heavyweight).

But hey, according to Money Mayweather.. he's better than Ali and Sugar Ray Laughing

When Ali and Sugar Ray got called out they stepped up and fought they didn't duck them. Ali had to fight frazier and foreman the fights they had made boxing. 50 years from now people be talking bout how mayweather ducked pacman. damaging the sport.

pound for pound its sugar ray as a fighter. is the better one fighting in how many different weight divisions and decades.

but as a boxer, and image of boxing its Ali. sugar ray fought for money. . ali fought for business

He was the greatest athlete because of his stamina and the way he could move around so well for 12 rounds against guys that had superior punching power, as a heavyweight it's hard to maintain the weight and be so fit, Robinson was a lower weight so could do the endurance without effecting the weight too much, some heavyweights don't even run they do strength training and just spa for fitness.

Nope, all Pay Per View mate. Well worth the $24.95 though I reckon. Could be one of the best heavyweight title fights in some years (assuming Haye takes it to Klitschko, who is one boring khunt)

Sadly noone got the battle they were hoping for. Haye played way defensive, and Klitschko just controlled the bout from beginning to end.
