| | Quote: | Controversial former West Coast and Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins is a shock nomination for the Madden Medal.
The self-confessed drug addict, who was suspended by the AFL for a year for bringing the game into disrepute, could win the award that recognises a retiring player who has "contributed most to the game and the broader community".
Cousins is nominated alongside Brad Johnson, Brett Kirk, Simon Goodwin, Andrew McLeod, Warren Tredrea and Brett Burton.
"Football will be poorer for their departure from the game, but their legacies will endure for decades to come," AFL Players' Association general manager of player relations Ian Prendergast said.
Named after the Madden brothers, Simon and Justin, the Madden Medal was established in 2007, when James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Glenn Archer, Mark Ricciuto and Anthony Koutoufides all retired at the same time.

Pretty interesting that he is considered, good luck to him.. I'd probably have my money on Kirk or maybe McLeod as i'm sure he would have contributed to the indigenous community.

| Would have to be Kirk, Johnson or McLeod. More likely McLeod. |

Best career contribution to the game, on and off the field is the criteria, I believe. |

| I reckon McLeod will get it. Done a lot for the Indigenous Community and is the best out of the lot, besides Cousins who I don't think will win it because of off-field issues. |

Fair to say all of these players are, but yeah Kirk would have to be one of the favourites for this medal along with McLeod and Johnson as well would be a fair chance. |

| I'd say McLeod is favourite. As C11 said, done a lot for the indigenous community and he along with Long and Wanganeen would be the three players to really stamp their mark for indigenous players in the AFL in the last decade or two. |
