PostSubject: Future of Australian cricket   Thu Dec 16, 2010 9:37 am

I know it's still only the 1st day of the 3rd test, but let's be honest our batting performance today (apart from Haddin, Hussey and Johnson) has been pretty dissapointing. I think Australian cricket should definately look towards its future, and depending what happens in our 2nd innings, some players may have to be dropped

I'll focus on batting first since we haven't bowled in this match yet.

- Phil Hughes. I believe we should stick by him. We all know that he can perform at test level but he isn't in the best of form atm. Not sure how long Kat is gone for but for the rest of this series and hopefully beyond, I hope the selectors stick with him. Will probably prove to be a brilliant test cricketer

- Ponting and Clarke. Ponting's batting of late hasn't been as bad as I think some people are making it out to be. He has been pretty inconsistant in 2010, but scored 71, 4, 77 and 72 against India, and playing India in India is tough so it's not a bad effort.
Pup, despite hitting 80 last test match has been struggling pretty badly. He's thought of as the next captain of Australian cricket, but now I think it's best if we drop him and let him score some runs shield cricket. Do we drop Ponting aswell? Or just sack him from the captaincy. As much as I love him and admire he's career, I think it's best if he moves on and makes way for a youngster

- Dhussey. Although I think he'd be good for the team and I'm sure he would perform well, I don't think we should pick him. He's 33 ( I think) and I think we're better off, in the long run looking for youngsters like Ferguson/Khawaja.

- Shaun Marsh. I'd love to see him in the team. He's 27 so still has 8 or so years left in him. Not sure how he'd come into the side though. Would he open or come in the middle order like he does in Shield?

So, just a thread for opinions on what the Australian cricket team should do with in the future

Ferguson, Khawaja, Paine, Lynn, George, Copeland, Beer, O'Keefe, Smith, Henriques, Hughes, Holland, James Pattinson are the guys that are the future of cricket, hopefully.

I would love this team for the future:

Robinson
Klinger/Marsh
Watson
Ferguson
M.Hussey (c)
Smith/O'Keefe
Haddin
Johnson
Hogan
McKay
Copeland

We do need some International experience in the team. Hussey will be a good captain because he is passionate at what he does. Haddin and Johnson in the team just because they can stay in a revive the squad of the top order fails.

Klinger is a batsman that is being overlooked all the time. Even if he is in his 30s, he does look like a batsman can tear apart a bowling attack.

When Hussey, Haddin and Johnson do retire, I would want Liam Davis, Paine (obviously) and Daniel Christian. He has been very dynamic with the white ball and with the bat as well.

second.

Ponting has really been on struggle street for a couple of years now. I think he's averaging about 35 since the last ashes... pritty poor considering the teams he's played. While he made runs in India, batting in India these days isn't as hard as it was (although still difficult)

Australia need to pick a group of players and stick with them for some time, similar to what England have been doing. 5 of their current top 6 was their top 5 last time in Australia - hard to believe isn't it?

Anderson was in and out of the team for awhile and now, he never was shunned from the English team, something Australia have been with their spinners of late.

Considering he doesn't feature in a fully fit tasmanian side, and bats 7-9 for them...and is a 5th choice bowler and bowls like collingwood, no, not really.

in a few years time smith will be good enough for top 5.....number 8 would be a travesty..especially when he barely bowls.

Probably but based on what i've seen of him i can't put him in the 11 (ATM).. Obviously things will change over the years people will get injured/turn shit/get better and new talent will come through the ranks.

So you're dropping Huss after 1 bad test after everything he has done for us this series? F***ing joke hang your head in shame, the series would be over already if it wasn't for him, he has been the 2nd best batter in the series for crying out loud. F*** some people are quick to jump on/off players just have abit of faith. Clarke over Huss OMFGGGGGGG? If Punter is dropped then why is Clarke retained? What a clown.

Have you thought a few old heads in the team could be a good thing at a time the likes of Hughes and Smith are in the team. Yeah lets just drop everyone over 30 that will do the trick.

batsmen wise we need an overhaul, only Watson and Hussey have looked up to international standard this series, and hughes should be the only other one to retain his place beyond the Ashes.

Ferguson, Khawaja and White should come into the side for the time being, with White being groomed as the next captain

Bowling wise we should probably be looking at a different attack also

Siddle is the only bowler i'm convinced should be in the team, Johnson is too hit and miss for my liking, and the others just don't take wickets or even look like taking them

Ryan Duffield from Western Australia has already started to look like a good prospect, if he continues to develop in the future then he looks like a good option. Clint McKay should get a go IMO and spinner wise....i honestly have no clue, Jon Holland? (yes vic bias Very Happy)

that's my view anyway, probably others see it all as shit...but you never know...

Fire up champion.
I love Hussey. His performance in Melbourne has nothing to do with me getting rid of him. I'm not dropping him because of his batting in Melbourne... Don't know why you think I've jumped off him after this game, I'm not one to stop supporting players or lose faith in them, maybe that's why I'm not dropping Clarke?

I want to see Australia make some changes and bring in some youth for the future. Players like Khawaja/Ferguson that will be there for the next Ashes series, and hopefully the one after that.
