PostSubject: Edge Retires   Tue Apr 12, 2011 10:43 am

Happened on Raw this week. From a couple of websites...

- WWE sources indicate that the Edge retirement from tonight's RAW is 100% legitimate and not part of a storyline.

The story that Edge told about tests coming back and showing issues with his neck are true. Edge was handed a mic at RAW tonight and told to go out and say bye however he wanted

- WWE has announced that Edge will surrender the World Heavyweight Title at tomorrow night's SmackDown tapings.

- Below is WWE's official announcement on Edge retiring from their website:

Less than a week after his successful title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, World Heavyweight Champion Edge has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to injury. The unexpected news brings to an end a storied WWE career spanning 13 years and consisting of 11 World Title reigns.

The Rated-R Superstar had been suffering numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands. This is not the first time Edge has experienced these symptoms of nueropraxia. An MRI in Atlanta last Monday was sent to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at The Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire.

In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.

Surprising news. Very unfortunate thing to happen to such a hard working wrestler. Still had a few good years left in him too.

if that's geniunely the case, then that's shattering! I know the guy was hated by many, but he was a fantastic heel i reckon, Edge and Christian together were huge! and he had some great matches over the years

Or KK is one of those who feels the need to remind himself that wrestling is choreographed. The rest of us already know that. But the rest of us know how much it hurts.

Bloody shattering, that is. I hope they don't give the belt to Del Rio as a result.

Yeah, it must be fake for a guy to have to undergo numerous spinal surgeries and have symptoms of neurapraxia. He's definitely faking it.

I got his autobiography 5 or 6 years back for Easter, it's called "On Edge" and it was a bloody good read (from what I remember). I know I respected him a lot more as a wrestler and person after reading it.

Devestating news but there's no doubt he made the right call. Somethings are just too important. I wish him all the best and hope he succeeds at whatever he sets out to do.

He was a prick but that's the sign of a great heel - if you genuinely hated them then they were doing their job brilliantly.

One of the last genuine characters left in the WWE.

Agreed, Hank. Hated that period with a passion.

But his retirement speech depressed me a lot.

I know, 27 years didnt he say? I knew he'd been in tag teams with him as far back as '97 but 27 years means they were friends when they were like 10-11 years old. Crazy

Great speech. Times like that you have to lift the veil on the WWE "story" and just him be himself for a moment. Love him or hate him, he was a great performer and was just doing his job, albeit a job he obviously loved.

A bit like Cena. Love them or hate them, they live/d for the WWE and love/d wrestling.

Of course, Cena's not in his league (I don't hate him but it's true).

Brad: Shades of HBK's farewell in that gesture. Good stuff by the company. Too bad they do too much stupid shit to cancel it out.

Hank: Interesting jab at Vicki during that speech (he mentioned Lita in a more positive light in the same sentence).
