PostSubject: AFL Season 2011: Round 17   Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:02 pm

Since of the lack of threads this season, this round will be done as one, as there were no threads for Round 16...

Ladder after Round 16:

Adelaide Vs Essendon - AAMI Stadium
Season Record:
Adelaide: 4-10-0 14th
Essendon: 7-7-1 8th

Adelaide coming off the bye against a team that struggles at AAMI Stadium. Essendon have beaten Geelong and Richmond in recent weeks, and this game is a must win for James Hird's side if they want to threaten the top four. Adelaide, like cross-town rivals Port, have been struggling to pull four quarters together, however, in their last game managed to defeat the sixth place Sydney side in a low-scoring encounter. Can Adelaide manage to upset the mix-up in the top eight and allow the Bulldogs a chance to capitalise?

Richmond Vs Gold Coast - Cazaly Stadium
Season Record:
Richmond: 5-9-1 13th
Gold Coast: 2-12-0 17th

AFL in Cairns will host the inconsistent young yet developing Richmond side, and a rapidly developing Suns side. Richmond coming off a final quarter fade out loss to the Bombers, and the Suns were humiliated by the Sydney Swans at home. You wouldn't think it, but this match has major importance in the finishing of the premiership season, Richmond if they don't win this will head for an eleventh straight season out of the finals, and the Suns if they win this an avoidance of the wooden spoon.

Carlton Vs Collingwood - MCG
Season Record:
Carlton: 10-4-1 4th
Collingwood: 13-1-0 1st

Two of the AFL's biggest rivals in the history of the game, play arguably the biggest game of the 2011 AFL Season thus far. Carlton coming off a shock loss to the Western Bulldogs, and the Magpies coming over a demolition job of the hapless Kangaroos. 80,000+ die hard footy fans are predicted to see the match of the season unfold, which could either give a huge question mark to the Collingwood premiership chances, or strengthen them. Either way, we are in for a mouth-watering encounter.

St. Kilda Vs West Coast - Etihad Stadium
Season Record:
St. Kilda: 6-7-1 11th
West Coast: 10-4-0 5th

The biggest disappointments of the season play this biggest surprise packets of the season under the roof at Etihad Stadium. The Saints won a match that was not the best for the neutrals, while the Eagles put in a performance that'd have everyone drooling, as well as the result, a win against Geelong. A win for West Coast could see them head into the top four with Hawthorn having a bye and Carlton playing Collingwood, while a Saints win would have them pressuring Essendon hard. Make or break for the Saints, who will win the battle of Etihad?

Melbourne Vs Port Adelaide - TIO Stadium
Season Record:
Melbourne: 6-7-1 10th
Port Adelaide: 2-13-0 16th

Melbourne couldn't of picked a worse week to have off, having a break then straight up into the soaring heat of the Northern Territory. Port Adelaide last time playing up here had the experience over Richmond, beating them for their second win. Not the first time these two have played up here with Melbourne beating the Power by a point last season. This is virtually a Spoon decider for Port Adelaide, a loss and a drop to bottom could be imminent and a win would see them potentially escape. For the Demons, also knocking on the door of the Bombers with a win.

Sydney Vs Fremantle - SCG
Season Record:
Sydney: 8-6-1 6th
Fremantle: 8-6-0 7th

In what could be an Elimination Final preview, the Swans take on the Dockers. Fremantle coming off the bye and Sydney coming over a training drill in the Gold Coast. Fremantle are far from safe of the drop out of the eight, but Sydney are safe by half a point, so an upset win in Sydney is the one thing all the Dockers players would be dreaming of at the moment, however, Sydney need this as well as they have one less game than majority of other teams which could push them out of the eight in the case of a loss.

Brisbane Lions Vs Geelong - Gabba
Season Record:
Brisbane: 3-12-0 15th
Geelong: 13-2-0 2nd

Looking at that record you wouldn't think Brisbane would have more wins out of the two teams in the last two weeks, but yes that's the case. Geelong have lost the last two games against Essendon and West Coast, where as Brisbane defeated Port Adelaide at home, and had a loss to Hawthorn in Tasmania. Could Brisbane provide the biggest upset of the season, as they did to Collingwood last year?

North Melbourne Vs Western Bulldogs - Etihad Stadium
Season Record:
North Melbourne: 6-9-0 12th
Western Bulldogs: 7-8-0 9th

A team looking on the up and a team looking on the decline is what we see here in this finals hunt. North with a win will be level on points, but their percentage suffered a battering from the Magpies last week, losing by 117 points. The Doggies however, upset the Carlton wagon, and could show there is still signs of fight for a finals spot, astonishing after three consecutive preliminary final exits.

Predictions:
Essendon
Richmond
Collingwood
West Coast
Port
Sydney
Geelong
Bulldogs.

Nice work Teal.

Will be extremely tough on Saturday against the Pies. With Waite out hopefully our forwardline will function. It certainly didn't against the Dogs when he went down. Carrazzo also out.

Sell out crowd as well! 90,000+. C'mon Blues, Pies by 5-6 goals though.

Could lose to Brisbane but hopefully we bounce back and win by 4-5 goals I think.

Interesting friday night coming up. Haven't won in Adelaide against the Crows or Power for a while. Adelaide are having a shocking year, but we didn't play the greatest first half in Brisbane during our last interstate trip so if the crows get a jump early they may just cause an upset. Feels very strange going over to Adelaide being favourites. Seeing 'Adel, AS' on our fixture late last year made me cringe with horror.

Haha my bad, haven't been able to get on here a lot lately.

Pretty confident we can get our fifth win in a row. It's amazing what an injury-free Hall and Cooney can do, even an in-form Williams too. The Carlton match was by far the best game we've played in quite a while but we should still be wary of North after the belting they copped against Collingwood.

Not looking at finals just yet, but if we make it then I'll be rapt. I called our season over rounds ago but we've hit a purple patch recently. Just as long as we keep playing our younger players still.

Good idea and good thread, weekly as one is better, Tigers will go down to Suns ? maybe an upset looms.

Saints against West Coast will be a tough game, dont know if us Saints can win but its at Ethihad so hopefully so!

Have Freo ever won at the SCG?

Pies might get a shake this week.

I say our boys can put in a good run in against Melbourne for four quarters. Jay "I love flying" Schulz will have a day out. Salopek back in, and for a bit of experience down back, Michael Pettigrew.

Matthew Lobbe has been a revolution the last few weeks. From playing SANFL reserves to now an upcoming ruckman. The most perfect timing.

And please to god, if Nick Salter is on Ricky Petterd I will cry.

Hoping to see a respectable performance from the Lions this weekend. Will certainly be a good test to see where a number of younger players are at against class opposition in Geelong. Stoked to see Brent Staker back!!

Also wouldn't be surprised to see Gold Coast give the Tigs a real scare up in Cairns tomorrow.

Was thinking the same as Hank in that first half, thought it was another terrible and big loss in Adelaide again to the Crows but we showed up in the second half and kicked 9 of the last 10 I think it was? First half wasn't pretty but we got it done in the end and move up to 6th. Needed it too with the Blues, Magpies, Swans and a trip to Perth against the Eagles all coming up.

GO BOMBERS! was a great feeling after thinking we were gone after halftime.

Quite happy with our performance against Collingwood today. We did well to challenge them with the injuries we have.

Juddy was B.O.G easily. Was in and under all day and was the only one that got the ball for us, picked up 22 contested possessions or something stupid like that. I thought Simpson had a great game as well. I thought Murph and Gibbs played well too. Twohmy did a good job on his debut I thought, did some good things.

We kicked something like 7 posters which cost us but overall I'm happy with the performance.

We didn't deserve a win at all. Shattering considering GC somehow knocked off Richmond, now last place. Mitch Banner, what have I said, the kid is a gem. Cameron Hitchcock put in a good performance thank god. Jay Schulz had a stinker. Chad Cornes, fantastic performance. Boak was looking quite slow, Robbie Gray fantastic. Cam O'Shea showed good signs, Nick Salter was terrible as usual. HAMISH HARTLETT. BAH GAWD. Gave it his all, the future of this club. Boak didn't play real flash, Salopek did alright. The future is looking bright, the future is silver, teal, black and white.
