EXCLUSIVE: FORMER Collingwood player Brodie Holland has been accused of a king hit in a suburban football match on Saturday. The former Collingwood star punched opposition player Ben Western during a Essendon District Football League match last Saturday. Holland rang Western earlier today to say sorry for his actions, which left Western hospitalised with a broken nose. “I just rang him up to say sorry and just to clear things up,” Holland said. “I don’t want to make any enemies in this environment and I just want to make sure everything is OK.” Holland admits to making contact with the head of Western during Saturday’s clash between Maribyrnong Park and Doutta Stars, an act which incensed the opposing coach – former Geelong and Essendon ruckman John Barnes. “It was a king hit,” Barnes claimed. “I saw it actually take place. There was a ball up in the centre of the ground, and our player - Ben Western - was watching the ball and then he was king hit. “Western went straight to the ground and then there was a ruckus afterwards. “The players came from all over the joint wanting to have a go at Holland and sort him out. “Benny was on the ground for about three to four minutes while all this was going on. “It made my blood boil.” Holland explained the situation, saying that frustration had got the better of him when he lashed out. “I threw a left coathanger, it was more or less. I think I got him flush on the chin or the noggin. “I basically just got scragged and frustrated until I basically couldn’t handle it anymore. Holland was reported for the hit on Western. Umpires on the day offered Holland an immediate two-week suspension. He accepted the ban rather than fight the charge at the tribunal. “I know what they’re like with me. They would’ve just given me more. “I was going to have a week off next week anyway with my bad back,” the captain-coach of Maribyrnong Park said. It’s still unknown whether the incident was captured on film, but Western was taken from the ground to receive medical treatment before managing to return with packing tape covering his nose. “It’s one of the best efforts I’ve seen,” said Barnes said of Western’s courage. Western spent close to five hours in hospital Saturday night waiting to be seen by surgeons as doctors refused to operate until a plastic surgeon had seen the damage to Western’s face. Barnes said Western was still shaken up from the incident.
