PostSubject: Carlton Goes Yellow to raise funds for cancer research   Wed Jun 17, 2009 1:13 pm

The Carlton Football Club will wear yellow guernseys to raise funds for cancer research in their round 14 match on Sunday, July 5. The yellow guernsey will replace the white clash guernsey Carlton was scheduled to wear in the match against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

Yellow is the colour of Livestrong and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which were established by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.

Each Carlton player guernsey features the Livestrong logo, Armstrong’s embroidered signature and will also be signed by the player. The guernseys will be auctioned post-match via a website, with all funds raised shared evenly between the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation.

Carlton CEO Greg Swann said the club was going yellow on July 5 to coincide with the start of the Tour de France, where Lance Armstrong will be attempting to claim a record eighth Tour victory.

“Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia, and many people in our football club and in the broader community have been impacted by this devastating disease,” he said.

“The Carlton Football Club is proud to go yellow and raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation to strengthen cancer awareness, prevention, treatment and care.”

Cancer survivor Lance Armstrong is on a mission to tackle cancer globally.

“By 2010, cancer will be the number one killer globally, and rates for melanoma are higher in Australia than anywhere in the world,” he said.

“A single person, organization or nation cannot tackle this epidemic alone. It will take a truly global effort to conquer cancer.”

Carlton forward Brendan Fevola met Armstrong when he rode in the Tour Down Under in January.

“It was great to have a chat, show him how to kick the footy and get to know Lance as a regular bloke,” he said.

“Lance’s story of overcoming cancer and going on to be a champion cyclist is inspirational.

“Lance came out of cycling retirement last year to raise cancer awareness globally, and Carlton is proud to support the Livestrong cause by raising funds in Australia for cancer research, and to continue our long association and support of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation.”

People can start bidding for the Carlton guernseys from 7pm on Thursday July 2 at nikestore.com.au. The auction will be open for seven days.

About The Lance Armstrong Foundation
At the Lance Armstrong Foundation, we fight for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today. There can be – and should be – life after cancer for more people. That's why we kick in at the moment of diagnosis, giving people the resources and support they need to fight cancer head-on. We find innovative ways to raise awareness, fund research and end the stigma about cancer that many survivors face. We connect people and communities to drive social change, and we call for state, national and world leaders to help fight this disease. Anyone anywhere can join our fight against cancer. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF has raised more than US$250 million for the fight against cancer.

Fucken hell, Carlton should be the navy blues, that includes getting rid of that horrible white guernsey they ware. The light blue looked bad, this one looks absolutely ridiculous.

And I know I might get questioned and I know it's for a good cause, but there are better solutions than making the whole jumper yellow, like, make the number on the back yellow, have a logo on the jumper that night, or whatever.

It gives coverage to the cause, though. It's like a massive advertisement, I've seen worse for charity (my mate dyed his hair pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Laughing)

I don't mind so long as they don't decide to wear it every second week.

And I agree, light blue and white both look stupid on Carlton.

I know you have to, and I know Blues fans don't want to. Another reason why they should turf it.

And I believe everyone should have an alternate strip, but it shouldn't differ much at all from their home jumper, I wouldn't mind Collingwood having one, but if it takes the tradition and purpose out of it (which it does to Carlton's and a few others), I would be the first one to complain.
