PostSubject: 2009 U.S. Open, Flushing Meadows   Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:30 am

August 31 - September 13

The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is just over a week away, and this years competition looks set to be a ripper.

On the men's side, 5-time reigning champion Roger Federer will be the favourite, but can expect stiff competition from the likes of Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and of course Rafael Nadal, who has recently returned from a troublesome knee injury which kept him out of Wimbledon.

Potential dark horses for the men's title include Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin, and could we see the Gooch finally step up or will he fade in to obscurity when it really matters.

On the women's side, the Williams sisters will be the favourites, with Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina, Elena Dementieva, Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic also big contenders.
This years open also sees the Grand Slam return of one of the most popular players in recent years, Kim Clijsters.

Aussie hopes rest on the shoulders of Jelena Dokic and Samantha Stosur who will both be competing.

The draw will be held on August 27.

MENS DRAW

Key Matches
Rafael Nadal v Richard Gasquet
Roger Federer v Devin Britton
Andy Murray v Ernests Gulbis
Novak Djokovic v Ivan Ljubicic
Lleyton Hewitt v Thiago Alves
Andy Roddick v Bjorn Phau
Juan Martin Del Potro v Juan Monaco
Pablo Cuevas v Chris Guccione

Some great first round matches lined up, none more so than Nadal v Gasquet.
Djokovic also has a tough first up test against Ivan Ljubicic who can be very good on his day.
If I have worked it out correctly, I think Hewitt will face Roger Federer in the third round should they both progress.

WOMENS DRAW

Key Matches
Dinara Safina v Olivia Rogowska
Ana Ivanovic v Kateryna Bondarenko
Roberta Vinci v Jelena Jankovic
Maria Sharapova v Tsvetana Pironkova
Kim Clijsters v Viktoriya Kutuzova
Jelena Dokic v Kirsten Flipkens
Venus Williams v Vera Dushevina
Samantha Stosur v Ai Sugiyama
Serena Williams v Alexa Glatch

The Williams sisters are on the same side of the draw so no chance of them facing off in the final.
Dokic and Stosur both should advance from their opening matches, and it's great to see Kim Clijsters back in a Grand Slam event, one of my favourite players in recent years. She will most likely face Marion Bartoli in Round 2 if she progresses.

cheers I can't wait

Nadal/Gasguet should be a good match...hopefull Gasguet can knock Nadal over to give Fed an easy path to the trophy Razz

Fed Express should dominate his match and I'll whip up my Federer avatar after this weekend. Smile

Hewitt should also win, but has a tough draw again Sad

Hewitt screwed for the third time this year at a major. Can't he get a decent draw at least once. And Stosur got some horrid luck too 4th round with S.Williams. Oh well there's always next year for an Aussie win.

No problems for Roger.

Nicole Vaidisova didn't even get through qualifying for the tournament so I have no idea who I'm going for on the Women's side... probably Clijsters.

Venus almost lost, she was up 4-0 in the 3rd and looked like she was gonna cruise but her opponent came back and almost won it. Venus' knee is screwed so their goes her chances of winning the tournament.

Rogowska took Safina to 3 sets but lost 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4. Good effort

Jarmila Groth also lost 6-2 6-3 to Shuai Peng

Rodionova the russian import won against some unknown in 3 sets.

Monique Adamczak lost to Cornet in 3 sets, another decent effort

Dokic is out though Stosur had a tough three set win against Sugiyama.

Peter Luczak lost in a real hit and miss 5 setter against Troicki, ended up winning the third and forth sets 6-1 6-2 then completely choking and losing the fifth 6-1.

Carsten Ball had a good win against Argentine Brzecki (sp) 7-6 6-3 6-4

Guccione is the only Australian Player not to play, and he will play Pablo Ceuvas from U R Gay hehehehehe tomorrow.

Hewitt of course won his game easily in straight sets

All I can say is how much did the Russian Mafia pay him.

Yeah, great effort from Rogowska - she came so close to causing a huge upset!

Lol.

Massive upset though, didn't Andreev take Federer to five sets at last year's US Open?

Yeah he did, and he probably should have won the match as well. But in all seriousness, there's no way considering his reasonably good form that could suggest he could be beaten that badly by an absolute bunny. He made the SF's at New Haven last week and lost to Verdasco in two tight Tie Breaks. Something is up, honestly.

Well I was defending Stosur lol. King's been around for quite a while and has cracked the top 50 once so she's basically like one of our Australian females. Good one year horrid the next.

Carsten Ball lost in 3 tight sets against Djokovic 3, 3 & 4.

No major upsets for the men over-night.

For the ladies that's a different story

Yaroslova Shvedova knocked off Jankovic in a tie-breaker in the third set.

Melanie Oudin the same girl who knocked off Jankovic at Wimbledon claimed the scalp of Elena Dementieva 57 64 63.

Safina had a shaky performance but won in 3 over Barrois.

Kuznetsova had a comfortable win over a Latvian unknown

Wozniacki was almost flawless in sending Petra Martic from Croatia home winning 6-1 6-0

Dulko Beat Bondarenko easily, Zheng beat Cornet in three, Wickmayer defeated Peng in three, Cirstea survived against Dubois from Canada.

Kat Bondarenko, Shahar Peer, Sara Errani & Nadia Petrova had overnight wins.

Aussie Import Anastasia Rodionova is one of two Australian's left in the draw (Other Lleyton Hewitt) in knocking off a biggish name in Sabine Lisicki the 23 seed 63 36 75

Hewitt of course plays Federer next round, Rodionova plays Katerina Bondarenko, She may set up a potential 4th round against Dulko if she can win.

If Hewitt can claim Fed's scalp which is possible as Federer isn't in top gear I feel, He will play one of Blake or Robredo in the fourth.
